Migraines
What are Migraines?
A migraine is a form of a headache with secondary associated symptoms that are not limited to nausea, vomiting, light exposure, and sounds. Migraines are a diagnosis of exclusion, that has shown association with genetics, hormones, and environmental factors.
Migraines can be debilitating, affecting your day to day function, relationships, mood, and happiness. Pain medications like Tylenol, Motrin, and anti-migraine medications prove effective, however, when pain is not alleviated, neurotoxins can help.
Medications such as Botox and Dysport are useful in the management of pain associated with migraine headaches. These neurotoxins inhibit activation, blocking the effects of chemicals and hormones responsible for these headaches.
Neurotoxins Applications:
- Tension headache
- Acute and chronic migraines
- Migraines with and without aura
How it Works
First, a detailed patient headache history is obtained. Based on determining client needs, a medical treatment plan is developed. Based on symptoms, areas of injection are mapped around the face, temples, and back of the head. After mapping, Botox is superficially injected until symptoms are improved. After the fixed site injection visit, a headache diary is kept to record frequency, location, and pain. At the follow-up appointment, if pain continues, you “track the pain” with further injections until symptoms improve/resolve.
What to Expect
The procedure time is approximately 30 minutes and requires between 40-60 units of Botox per session. Generally, clients experience a minimal pricking discomfort with occasional redness and bruising to the area.
Patients can have variable results, but many have symptoms resolution for up to 12 weeks. Over a series of treatments, expect pain to decrease.
